Final Score : Claymores 9 - 3 Galaxy
In a stadium where the Claymores have never lost, Jim Criner's men went out and still hold that record. A desperation bomb in the final seconds sent the Claymores towards a 2-2 record.
Game Summary : It took the Claymores just 7 minutes to get on the scoreboard with a Wayne Lammle field goal from 41 yards - the Claymores longest of the season by far. Ralf Kleinmann tied the scores at three with a field goal of his own from 34 yards. The teams returned the the lockeroom level at 3 apiece.
The third quarer brought no scoring and the crowd of over 32,000 had to wait until the final minute to see any more points being added. When they were though, it did not make happy viewing for the Galaxy faithful. Spence Fischer threw up a bomb from 46 yards and wide receiver Allan DeGraffenreid came down with it for his biggest catch of the year. Steve Pelluer had the unenviable task of trying to bring the Galaxy back in 33 seconds. He completed a pass to midfield but a penalty brought the play back to the line of scrimmage and that effectively ended the Frankfurt challenge.
The result leaves the Claymores 2-0 on the road and 0-2 at home. A somewhat unusual state of affairs.
Defense : An excellent performance by the Highland Sting defensive unit. The secondary held Frnkfurt passer Steve Pelluer to only 97 yards and stuffed the prolific Bobby Philips for only 23 yards. Keep this sort of defense up and the World Bowl will be no problem! Any time a defense can hold an opposing teams offense to 3 points it is encouraging. More of the same next week please!
Offense : Spence Fischer has really settled in as quarterback, his confidence is growing which was highlighted by his 46 yard touchdown pass to Allan DeGraffenreid. The running game has also established itself with Siran Stacy rushing for 70 yards. National Scott Couper made his biggest impact of the season catching three crucial passes for 22 yards. Against Frankfurt - the league's leading defense, coming away with a win is tremendous. Although they only scored 9 points, it was enough. The offense appear to be slowly coming out of its shell, look for a higher scoring game against London.
Special Teams :Another excellent game from Kicker/Punter Wayne Lammle. He averaged 47 yards on punts and successfully converted a 41 yard field goal. Gary Parker's missed PAT will not do his confidence any good but after breaking his duck last week, he is sure to bounce right back! This unit has really come on since the start of the season and Lammle's kicking is exceptionl, coach Criner should not be afraid to take long field goals now.
