Frankfurt Galaxy @ Scottish Claymores
Sunday 25 May, 1998

Final Score : Claymores 12 - 15 Galaxy

The Claymores first home game outside Edinburgh and Murryfield Stadium took place in a less than half completed Hampden Stadium in Glasgow.

For once Scotland took the lead on Jon Baker's 45 yard field goal 9 minutes in. However, it was shortlived asDarrick Branch caught an 7 yard touchdown pass from QB Damon Huard at the end of the first quarter for a 7-3 lead.

A short pass over the middle from Jim Ballard aimed at TE Willy Tate turned into a 29 yard touchdown play when Tate beat two defenders and into the endzone. The PAT failed giving the Scots a slender two point lead at 9-7.

The Claymores extended their lead to 12-7 before half time thanks to Gary Parker's 22 yard field goal.

The only score of the entire second half proved decisive. Huard again hit Darrick Branch in the endzone, this time from 8 yards out. Galaxy head coach Dick Curl opted for the two point conversion for a potential 3 point lead and his gamble paid off when Huard hit German national player Joerg Heckenbach wide open in the back left corner of the endzone.

Once again the Claymores had a last chance to win it with a late touchdown when they got the ball back with 1:39 remaining on the clock. However, Jim Ballard's pass was intercepted by linebacker Shawn Banks allowing Frankfurt to run out the clock. Déja vu.
