World Bowl '95
Sunday 17th June 1995
Olympisch Stadion, Amsterdam

Final Score : Galaxy 26 - 22 Admirals

If ever there was a favourite in a game, it was Amsterdam in this one. The Admirals under explosive coach Al Luginbill, had proved the class of the league, running away to a 9-1 record. Their sole defeat came at the hands of their World Bowl foes, the Frankfurt Galaxy, a 13-28 loss in week 8 in Frankfurt's home Waldstadion.

This game, was to be played at Amsterdam's Olympisch Stadion, where the team had not lost all year. This, however was to be the night of the upset as Frankfurt proceeded to pull the shocker of the season.

Things began to plan for the Admirals as they took their time on a 12 play drive that covered 73 yards and was completed when QB Will Furrer hit Eddie Jones in the endzone for a 5 yard completion. The extra point gave the Ads a 7-0 lead early on.

However, a good return on the subsequent kickoff gave the Galaxy excellent field position on the Admirals 46 yard line and they moved the ball quickly and effectively. On the third play of the drive, QB Paul Justin hit Bobby Olive for the first of his Bowl record three touchdown passes, for 11 yards. The kick failed and the Ads still lead by 1 which is how it stayed until half-time.

Mid-way through the third period, Justin connected with Olive again for a 4 yard score that gave Frankfurt and coach Ernie Stautner their first lead of the game.

The Galaxy then cemented their lead as an on-form Justin threw a 31 yard touchdown pass to Mike Bellamy making the score 20-7 with just over a quarter to play.

The game looked to be well and truly over 4 minutes into the fourth quarter when Nate 'Crazy Legs' Bolton scampered 30 yards on the left side for another Frankfurt score and a 26-7 lead (the kick failed) with just 11:23 left on the clock.

However, Furrer and the Admirals were not about to leave a 9-1 record with nothing and began to play. On a 78 yard drive, Furrer completed 5 of 7 passes to lead his side to the Galaxy 1 yard line. From there, RB TC Wright covered the remaining yard for the score.

Things began to get tense when Furrer connected with Wright on a 9 yard pass with 34 seconds left in the game. Furrer then proceeded to hit Beach for the 2 point conversion to narrow the gap to just 4 points. On a field soaked by a continuous rain storm which had dominated the game, Admirals linebacker Mike Anderson recovered the onside kick to give the Dutch side a chance to win a game they should have been out of long ago.

Furrer completed a 10 yard pass to Dedric Smith before launching two successive hail mary passes to the endzone, both of which fell incomplete to end the game.

Game MVP, Paul Justin summed up the final few minutes "In the last five minutes I was going psycho crazy. It drove me nuts. We couldn't hold onto the football and gave them a chance to get back into the football game. That would have been a bad way to lose it. After that it was a great feeling"

However for Luginbill, his arm in a sling after dislocating his shoulder slipping while running out from the locker room at the start of the game, it was contemplation of what might have been "I feel about as well as we played, not very well. My shoulder hurts but it hurts more up here (points to his head). We gave ourselves a chance to win the game at the end, and again it was them who came up with the plays."

Luginbill's Admirals made a game that was dead in the third quarter tense to the final second in what may have been one of most exciting ways of winning or losing a championship.
